Onyx & Ivory - Book Review
Hello Everyone!
Today I’m going to review one
of my latest reads ‘Onyx & Ivory’. By Mindee Arnett .It came with the May ‘Save
the Kingdom’ Fairyloot box. For
more information on this box see my previous post!
This is a spoiler free review so don’t worry!
Just as an extra note, I am not
being payed or sponsored for this post, and it is a completely honest
review.
So, without any further ado; let
get started:
General Overview:
I
was really excited to read this book, as it was may first ever
Fairyloot book. And I was not disappointed. It was an awesome book
that had me hooked! (I read the whole thing in under 8 hours...) The
first chapter really draws you in with a sense of adventure,
desperation, and excitement.
The book is divided into two
POV’s which was expertly done. You really get the sense that you
are completely following along with the two perspectives with no
strange jarring or time skips.
The
world building was done very well, although, I do think a map might
be useful, as several parts of the book feature travel and different
areas of the world. It would be nice to have a glance at a map and
see what is where.
Characters:
Overall
I was very impressed with the characters. A little bit of old
mixed in with new. The overall dialogue was very enjoyable and in no
way felt forced or out of character. They all felt unique, as in I
didn’t feel like all the characters had the same feel and flavour
if you know what I mean. Each of them had a neatly done backstory
which
felt real and perhaps
almost tangible. I
felt a connection with the characters and felt their joy and griefs
along with them.
Romance:
I
won’t go into too much detail about to romance, as I don’t want
to give away anything. I thought
that the romance could have been a little different. I felt that the
tension that should have been between our two characters dissolved
too quickly. I believe that under the circumstances the
tension should have been kept
up for longer, or at least something drastic enough to change their
minds. This is my own opinion
though, and despite this minor thing, I loved the two!
The Mystery:
I
read between the lines of everything. Call it a sixth sense whatever,
but I already knew who our ‘Big Baddie’ during one of their
initial scenes. However, this was most certainly not a determinant,
on the contrary this made me want to read more, so that I could
experience their downfall.
The World:
As
I mentioned above, I really think a map would be helpful for this
book. We read about different things happening in different places,
and we might have a very vague idea of where that is, but for the
most part we don’t.
The magic felt real and wasn’t
overdone. I liked the fact that there were two different types of
magic which is an element not commonly seen in my reading.
Rating
Overall,
this book is definitely recommended by
me, and
I award it 8/10!
